Brown University’s economics midterm turned into a case study on AI cheating. 

After a December campus shooting left students uneasy about in‑person exams, Professor Roberto Serrano moved the midterm online. The results were shocking: out of 86 students, 40 scored a perfect 100 and the average soared to 96 far above the usual 65–80 range. 

Many answers looked oddly convoluted, and when Serrano ran the questions through ChatGPT, the patterns matched. 

For the final, he switched back to supervised, in‑person testing. Of the 27 students who dropped or skipped the exam, 22 had scored 100 on the midterm. Among those who sat the final, the average collapsed to 48 the lowest in course history and 19 students failed. 

This episode highlights how quickly AI tools are reshaping academic integrity, and how universities are scrambling to adapt. 👀
