The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) has provided a new explanation for why it will not participate in this year’s Capital Pride parade, citing concerns over student safety, political activism, and unpredictable disruptions.

According to CEO Stacey Kay, the decision follows challenges over the past two years, including the board’s 2024 withdrawal after Capital Pride adopted a pro-Palestinian statement and the 2025 parade, which was halted by protesters, leaving participating students and staff waiting before being directed to leave the route.

Capital Pride says the event remains safe and criticized the OCDSB for not reaching out to discuss its concerns. Organizers say extensive planning and safety measures are in place and that the board is still welcome to participate.

The decision has also drawn criticism from some elected trustees, who questioned both the board’s changing explanations and whether safety concerns are the real reason behind the move.
