Canada has announced a new $900 million military aid package for Ukraine following a meeting between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the 2026 NATO Summit in Ankara, Türkiye.

The package includes $475 million for ammunition, nearly $400 million to build 35 Canadian-made armoured vehicles, and $50 million for critical military technology and engineering equipment. The funding is part of Canada’s $2.8 billion military support commitment for 2026.

During the meeting, Carney reaffirmed Canada’s support for Ukraine, announced the extension of Operation UNIFIER until 2029, discussed expanding defence partnerships, including the co-development of drones, and pledged continued support for Ukraine’s reconstruction, energy infrastructure, and sanctions against Russia.

Carney also condemned Russia’s ongoing attacks, calling Vladimir Putin’s actions “barbarism” and saying they “will not succeed.” He added that Canada and its allies remain committed to supporting Ukraine for as long as necessary.

According to the Government of Canada, the latest announcement adds to more than $25.5 billion in total Canadian support for Ukraine since 2022.

The funding has sparked debate across Canada, with some supporting continued military assistance for Ukraine, while others question the spending as the country faces housing affordability challenges, rising food bank use, and ongoing economic pressures.
