FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 15 YEARS, THE OCDSB WILL NOT PARTICIPATE IN OTTAWA’S ANNUAL CAPITAL PRIDE‼️😱

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) is facing criticism after confirming it will not participate in this year’s Capital Pride Parade, ending a tradition of marching that dates back to 2011.

The board says the decision is because Capital Pride takes place in late August, outside of the school year, adding that it focuses on Pride education and inclusion during June while students and staff are in school.

The decision has drawn backlash from several elected trustees and Capital Pride organizers. Trustee Donna Blackburn called the move “out of touch” and argued it sends the wrong message to LGBTQ+ students, while trustee Lyra Evans said the decision could further erode trust in the board. 

Capital Pride Executive Director Callie Metler also expressed concern, saying visibility and support remain important regardless of whether school is in session.

The announcement comes weeks after the board also cancelled a planned drag storytime event at Mutchmor Public School during Pride Month, leading some critics to question whether there is a broader shift in the board’s approach to LGBTQ+ inclusion.
