NBA contracts are getting insane. The Boston Celtics gave Jaylen Brown a $285M supermax, the Cleveland Cavaliers paid Donovan Mitchell $273M, Evan Mobley landed $269M, and both Chet Holmgren and Paolo Banchero secured massive $239M extensions with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Orlando Magic. Some of these NBA players are already proven All-Stars and playoff performers. But some of these basketball players are getting paid based on potential and what their franchises believe they can become over the next decade.

Jaylen Brown is on the Philadelphia 76ers now, still on the contract he signed with Boston. Donovan Mitchell used to be on the Utah Jazz but went to the Cleveland Cavs for that money. Evan Mobley is also center on the Cleveland Cavaliers with Mitchell and other NBA superstars such as James Harden, Jarrett Allen, and Darius Garland. 
Chet Holmgren went to the NBA Finals and won an NBA Championship with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the OKC Thunder. Paolo Banchero came out of Duke University where he played NCAA Men’s College Basketball and competed in March Madness and is now with Franz Wagner on the Orlando Magic.

With the NBA salary cap exploding, $200M and $300M deals are becoming the new normal. But one injury, one disappointing season, or stalled development can completely change how a contract is viewed. At the same time, any of these deals could look like a steal if the player turns into a championship level superstar.
