The Rock and Zelia friendship began backstage at a WWE tryout in New York. Vega (then Thea Trinidad) introduced herself and shared that her father, who passed away in the September 11 attacks, was a massive fan of The Rock. Touched by the story, he hugged her, looked up information about her father, and the two formed a lasting bond.

The Rock personally cast her as AJ Lee in his 2019 film Fighting with My Family.
