I usually don’t post things here about my family and my son, since this is my public IG and I’m one of those extra-careful moms, but I wanted to share some thoughts :

I was a young single mom and I had my son Aj when I was 17 years old. When I worked a lot, people said I didn’t spend enough time with him. When I didn’t work a lot, people said I needed to take care of my responsibilities. When I stopped going out on the weekends with friends, people said I disappeared. On the occasions I did go out (I’m talking 2-3x/year, on convention weekends when I was out of town), people would say I was neglecting my kid. If I would cook food for him, people would say it wasn’t healthy enough. If I would take him to the park, people would ask why he had a bruise or a mosquito bite. No joke, I’ve literally been called a bad parent because he had a mosquito bite and a bruise from going to a park. 😂

On top of all this, it wasn’t just people that didn’t matter to me. It was close friends and family who criticized me. Sometimes it was just to criticize, sometimes it was with good intentions but poor tact.

My point is; it doesn’t matter whether you’re a parent, a business owner, a caring friend or family member, or just someone trying to build your life. People will comment and criticize you whenever they have the chance, sometimes with good intentions and sometimes without good intentions. My job as a parent is to do what I truly believe is in the best interest of me and my son’s life; body, mind, and soul. I think as long as we stay on that focus, it’s not our business what everyone else thinks of us. Am I a bad parent for doing whatever I can to put him in a good school, teach him good manners and habits, and make sure he’s well traveled? No. But people don’t always see it that way. Sometimes people’s opinions count and they matter, but in the end nobody will take care of YOU better than YOU. Besides, doesn’t that look like a kid that’s having fun to you? 👦🏻💁🏻‍♀️ #thatisall #noheakoamakana
