With the first anniversary of the devastating Eaton and Palisades fires on January 7 approaching, many in our community may notice painful memories and emotions resurfacing – for adults and children alike – even when life appears to have moved forward.

Sometimes these reactions take us by surprise. It’s not uncommon to experience trauma-related stress responses, including anxiety, irritability, nightmares, or a general sense of unease. Triggers can come from news coverage, or from sights or smells associated with the fires – and may affect each person differently.

Here are a few ways to care for yourself and support your family during this time:

🗣 Create dialogue: Ask loved ones, “How are you really feeling?” and let them know you’re there to listen.
🫂 Validate reactions: Irritability, withdrawal, or separation anxiety in youth are common responses to trauma.
🍎 Prioritize basics: Focus on sleep, nutrition, routine, and small grounding or mindfulness practices.
📲 Know your resources: If distress feels overwhelming or doesn’t ease, call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7.

Your mental wellness matters. As we recognize Mental Wellness Month, we encourage you to take time to care for yourself and your family.
