June is PTSD Awareness Month. Did you know that symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often begin within three months after a traumatic event—but in some cases, they may not appear until years later?

PTSD can affect anyone, including children, following trauma such as abuse, violence, or a natural disaster—like the devastating wildfires our communities faced last January.

For some, symptoms like recurring nightmares, feeling detached from others, or difficulty sleeping can linger and disrupt daily life. In children, PTSD may show up differently—often through behavioral changes like increased clinging, trouble sleeping, or acting out, rather than expressing fear directly.

Recognizing the signs is an important first step. Learn more and find resources at the NAMI website: https://www.nami.org/about-mental-illness/mental-health-conditions/posttraumatic-stress-disorder/?tab=support
