Content Warning: discussion of sexual assault and rape

During Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), we honor victim/survivors of sexual violence by wearing denim on Denim Day. This year, Denim Day is on Wednesday, April 24th.
Why wear denim? In Italy in 1999, the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the victim/survivor wore tight denim jeans at the time of her assault. Because she wore tight jeans, the Court assumed that the victim/survivor helped the perpetrator remove them, which implied consent. The ruling sparked international protests and the creation of the first Denim Day campaign in Los Angeles, California in 1999. Wearing denim symbolizes a commitment to building connected communities and preventing sexual violence.
If you or someone you know has been harmed, you can find a local sexual violence advocate at mncasa.org/find-help. Advocates are also available at the Minnesota Day One Crisis Hotline. Call 1-866-223-1111 or text 612-399-9995 for support today. #SAAM #SAAM2024 https://denimday.org/history/
