It’s time for more white men to speak up on behalf of Nolan Xavier Wells. 

I wrote him a letter in my journal last night that I wanted to share. We all have a voice. And it takes courage to share our feelings. But I am lucky to have this platform and I feel earnestly that I must speak up. 

If I don’t use this page to speak for what I believe, what’s the point of it? 

For some context - if you haven’t seen anything about Nolan online: he was found dead after the Fourth of July off Mississippi’s gulf coast. There isn’t clear information about what happened. We lack intel on why his ‘friends’ returned back and he didn’t. His parents explained that they always taught him to stay with a group. He was a superb athlete, so drowning is unlikely. The troubling part about this story is that many of the boys he was with that day have deactivated their social media accounts following his death. Their parents as well. These boys have tried to remove all their photos featuring him. Nolan’s family is asking for transparency and answers, and having a great deal of trouble finding clarity. 

I’ve done a lot of research on this, and as of today - based on what I could find, this is how I’m feeling. Too many stories of racial induced violence in this country. We need systemic change. 

When I’ve lost friends… the last thing I would have wanted to do was delete a picture with them. 

Hard not to think about Breonna Taylor and so many others too when a story like this comes up.
