❤️ This World Chimpanzee Day, we're celebrating the incredible work happening right here at the Detroit Zoo to advance great ape healthcare around the world.

The Great Ape Heart Project, headquartered at the Detroit Zoo, is an international collaboration dedicated to improving cardiac care and research for great apes. For nearly two decades, the project has helped veterinarians better understand and treat heart disease by building a growing database of cardiac health information that benefits apes in both human care and the wild.

One of the latest contributions came from Ajua, a male chimpanzee who lives at the Detroit Zoo. During his recent routine wellness exam, the Zoo's veterinary team and visiting heart specialists performed a cardiac ultrasound and radiographs. The good news? Everything looked great, and Ajua received a clean bill of health. Even better, his ultrasound findings were added to the Great Ape Heart Project database, helping advance knowledge that could benefit great apes everywhere.
