Children haven’t yet learned that belonging can feel conditional, so they offer themselves to the world without negotiating who they have to become first. As we grow older, many of us learn through criticism, and rejection, that acceptance can feel contingent on behaving a certain way. Whether that contingency is real or perceived, the nervous system starts treating belonging as something that must be earned rather than simply experienced.
