Two Black men killed by law enforcement in Tennessee within one week. The NAACP is now demanding answers.
Tyrin Johnson was 20 years old. A father. A former Tennessee State University student. He was shot and killed at 4 a.m. on July 5 by National Guard soldiers assigned to Trump’s Memphis Safe Task Force.

Darius Chappell was 34 years old. He was tackled, tased, and bitten by a K-9 on video during his arrest on June 29. Two days later, he was found dead in his jail cell.

Their deaths are at least the fifth and sixth fatalities connected to the Memphis Safe Task Force since the federal initiative began.

The NAACP sent a letter to the Acting U.S. Attorney General calling for an immediate DOJ investigation into both deaths and the immediate suspension of the task force, which the organization says has “surged federal agents into Memphis despite their lack of training on civilian policing.”

Critics say the Trump administration has deliberately targeted Black-led cities with these federal interventions. The pattern is documented. The names are mounting.
