Second Cleanse

The second cleanse is performed after the massage to remove massage oil and any remaining product while preparing the skin for the finishing steps of the facial.

Unlike the first cleanse, which is intentionally brief and extremely gentle to avoid stimulating the superficial lymphatic system before lymphatic drainage, the second cleanse allows for a more thorough and intentional technique.

Purpose

	•	Remove massage oil and product residue.
	•	Respect and protect the skin’s lipid barrier.
	•	Provide a final opportunity to encourage healthy circulation.
	•	Reinforce lifting movement patterns before the treatment is completed.

Product Selection

Use a hydrating cream cleanser that supports the skin barrier. Look for formulas containing:

	•	Ceramides
	•	Fatty acids
	•	Cholesterol

These ingredients closely resemble the skin’s natural lipid barrier and help maintain barrier integrity during cleansing.

Technique

	•	Use enough cleanser to provide continuous glide over the skin.
	•	Work with smooth, controlled, upward movements whenever possible.
	•	Avoid downward dragging of the tissues.
	•	Maintain contact with the client by keeping at least one hand on the face throughout the cleanse.
	•	Avoid creating folds or creases in the skin. If the skin begins to wrinkle or bunch, apply more cleanser to restore glide and reduce friction.
	•	Pressure may be slightly firmer than during the first cleanse, but it should always remain comfortable and never aggressive.

Key Principle

The second cleanse is not simply about removing oil. It is the final opportunity to cleanse the skin while protecting the lipid barrier, maintaining tissue integrity, and finishing with controlled lifting movements that complement the overall treatment.
