When Indian Ministers Actually Resigned on Principle 🇮🇳

Long before "accountability" became a buzzword, Indian politics had moments that genuinely lived up to it. In 1956, Railway Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri resigned after the Ariyalur train tragedy claimed over 150 lives, accepting moral responsibility even though he wasn't directly at fault — setting a benchmark that's rarely been matched since.

The pattern continued through the decades. T.T. Krishnamachari stepped down as Finance Minister in 1958 after an inquiry uncovered irregularities in LIC's investment decisions during the Mundhra scandal. In 1962, Defence Minister V.K. Krishna Menon resigned following India's defeat in the war with China, accepting responsibility amid heavy criticism over the country's defence preparedness. And in 1987, V.P. Singh stepped down as Defence Minister over disagreements tied to the HDW submarine deal investigation, reinforcing the idea that transparency should come before political convenience.

Four ministers, four different decades, one consistent thread — accepting responsibility rather than deflecting it. A reminder of what political accountability once looked like in India.
