In December 2016, Yadira Guillermo García drew national attention in Mexico after taking drastic action following the kidnapping of her husband by a criminal group. Her husband, Isauro de Paz Duque, a well-liked engineer, was allegedly seized by the gang Los Tequileros in San Miguel Totolapan, a violence-plagued municipality in Guerrero state. Rather than wait on authorities in a region long plagued by cartel impunity, García joined forces with an armed community self-defense group that detained around 20 people said to be linked to the gang, among them the mother of its leader, Raybel Jacobo de Almonte, known as "El Tequilero."

García then recorded a video message, broadcast on local television, demanding an exchange. "We have your mother here, mister known as El Tequilero," she said. "In return for my husband's life, I will deliver your mother. I want him safe and sound." When the first appeal went unanswered, the captors released a second video of the leader's mother directly pleading with her son to hand the engineer back.

The standoff drew a deployment of around 220 soldiers and police to prevent a bloodbath, and the government ultimately mediated a deal. Both the engineer and the gang leader's mother were released unharmed. The case highlighted the desperation of families in areas where the state offers little protection, though human rights groups and security experts warned then, as now, that retaliatory kidnappings and vigilante justice tend to escalate the danger for everyone and deepen the cycle of violence, underscoring the need for coordinated law enforcement.
