On this day in 2014, I learned the chapter that raised me was over. The uniform, the rhythm, the identity I had worn through my entire adult life was finished. People asked what came next, as if a man becomes less when one door closes. They didn’t understand that some endings are just invitations.

So I told them the truth. I would teach. I would become a journalist. I would live, capture life and see the world. Not from a distance, but from the inside of it. In crowded markets under desert lights. In backstreets full of music and smoke. In moments where strangers become stories and stories become home.

Within 90 days, I had done two of the three. Within four years, I completed them all. Somewhere between departure gates, foreign nights, warm handshakes, and the sound of life happening in languages I didn’t yet know, #beingMrFranklin was born.

The world is always bigger than the life you think you’re losing. Sometimes you have to let one version of yourself die so another one can finally begin.
