What's the deal with these little plastic hangtags? 🏷

Bag tags are a common sight on long distance thru-hikes. On the Appalachian Trail Pacific Crest Trail, and Continental Divide Trail, the small plastic tags dangle from the packs of thru- and section-hikers signifying their intent to hike the entirety of the route. Many remain on hiker's bags for years following their hike, a symbol of the massive accomplishment that is finishing a long trail. We thought Trails subscribers deserved something similar.
