In an email obtained by Sports Illustrated, Chancellor Rich Lyons announced to Cal Athletics staff that Ron Rivera is now signed until 2028 as general manager and athletic director for Cal football.

Co-Athletic Directors Jay Larson and Jenny Simon-O’Neill also received extensions for another year after taking over for former Athletic Director Jim Knowlton on July 2, 2025. Together, they will oversee Cal’s 29 other sports, while Rivera will command football operations.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, which obtained a copy of the contract, Rivera will earn $800,000 annually from a $250,000 base salary and a $550,000 “talent fee.” Rivera could earn up to an additional $800,000 per year in bonuses based on how many games the Bears win each season, reaching the maximum payout with 10 or more wins.
