Astronomers have detected a complex organic molecule called 2 methoxyethanol in a giant cloud of gas and dust near the center of the Milky Way. This molecule is chemically related to sugars and shares structural features found in compounds important for life. It was discovered using radio telescopes that identify molecules by the unique frequencies of light they emit in space.

The finding strengthens the idea that the building blocks of life can form naturally in interstellar space long before planets are created. Such molecules may have been delivered to young planets by comets and asteroids, potentially contributing to the chemistry that led to life on Earth.
