The blue glow around the Sun in Martian sunrises is caused by the way sunlight interacts with extremely fine dust particles suspended in Mars's atmosphere. On Earth, our atmosphere scatters blue light in all directions, making the sky appear blue and leaving the Sun looking yellow or orange. Mars works differently.

Martian dust preferentially scatters blue light forward, meaning the blue wavelengths travel in the same direction as the incoming sunlight. As a result, the area immediately surrounding the rising or setting Sun appears blue, while the rest of the sky takes on its characteristic reddish color. This effect is unique to the size and composition of Martian dust particles and the planet's thin atmosphere. Scientists study these colors to learn more about Mars's atmospheric conditions and dust behavior.
