Being able to complete 40 consecutive push ups is linked to better cardiovascular health, but the push ups themselves are not the direct reason for a lower heart disease risk. In a Harvard study of active male firefighters, those who could perform more than 40 push ups had a much lower rate of cardiovascular events over the following decade. Push up capacity is considered a simple indicator of overall fitness and heart health.

The study included only men because the participants were male firefighters, so its findings cannot be directly applied to women. Researchers did not conclude that the same 40 push up benchmark predicts heart health in women. More research involving female participants is needed to determine whether a similar relationship exists.
