North Hempstead approved a proposed mixed-use development at the Inspiration Wharf business district in Port Washington following a five-hour hearing in which residents overwhelmingly opposed the plan.

The town board voted 7-0 to approve the site plan and application for a special use permit, capping a heated hearing during which residents urged the board to do the opposite.
