Gangrel explained on Insight with Chris Van Vliet how his name caused WWE a $5 million lawsuit. He had wrestled as the Vampire Warrior until Vince Russo called on a Friday in 1998 to fast-track the vampire character, and the name came from the top: "I heard it was Vince McMahon. He goes, 'I like the name Gangrel.' Well, this was a weekend. Nobody ran the name through legal. So by Monday, they had a lawsuit for like $5 million."

Gangrel is a vampire clan in White Wolf's Vampire: The Masquerade, the role-playing game material Gangrel himself had been sending WWE for years to pitch the character. The settlement forced an on-page credit: "In all the WWE magazines, it would say 'Masquerade by White Wolf,' and they had to do that for five years. I feel like when that deal ran up, so did mine. I feel like I had a black mark on my name."

Years later, he took the name for himself: "Nobody paid attention to the name Gangrel. I had a lawyer, I just filed on the trademark. Nobody fought it. So I ended up with the Gangrel name."
