If your kid is young for their grade, this might be the most important decision you make for them.

Think about your son or daughter walking into ninth grade barely through puberty, unsure of themselves, just trying to fit in. Now picture them walking in mature, developed, comfortable in their own skin. That is a completely different experience of high school.

And here’s what most parents don’t realize. This goes deeper than four years of high school. The trauma of showing up unready, of being the smallest, the youngest, the one trying to survive, that stays with a kid for life. It shapes how they see themselves for the next sixty years. It is literally a different life.

Look up relative age effect. The research is clear. The older kids in each grade tend to become the more successful ones. And the reason is confidence.

Now here’s where basketball comes in.

The NCAA just changed the rules. Nineteen is now the most important number in youth basketball. Your eligibility clock starts the year after you turn nineteen, whether you are enrolled in college or not. That means there is now a perfect age to be as a senior, turning nineteen during your senior year after September 1st, not before, not after.

So if they are young for their grade, give them the gift of time. Reclass with a plan. Hit nineteen at the right moment.

They get a better shot at the game, and a better shot at a completely different life. #Hoopstudy
