Mr. Mario Hamilton received countless nominations and while some nominations talked about Algebra, most of them talked about who he is as a person.

Students wrote about passing his class because he refused to let them give up. They talked about the encouragement after class, the conversations that had nothing to do with equations, and the way he shows up for students on both their hardest and happiest days.

One nomination especially stayed with us. A student wrote about seeing Mr. Hamilton stop to help someone with a flat tire after school. They weren’t talking about a lesson plan. They were talking about the kind of person he chooses to be when no one expects anything from him.

Students learn Algebra in Mr. Hamilton’s classroom. Just as importantly, they learn from the example he sets every day. Long after they’ve forgotten how to solve for x, they’ll remember what generosity looked like because they saw it in him.
