Berkeley City Council voted 5-4 Tuesday night to ease restrictions on police use of K-9 units and helicopters.

The City Council was also scheduled to vote on lifting a 2020 prohibition on the use of tear gas by the Berkeley Police Department, but it ultimately voted to delay to Sept. 15 as the meeting dragged on with public outrage. 

The new regulations, introduced by District 1 Councilmember Rashi Kesarwani, open the way for K-9 units and helicopters to be used in a broader array of situations, and with less rigorous approval requirements.
