Last week, UC students secured $20 million in emergency funding to support basic needs centers and disability student services across the 10 campuses in the 2026-27 California state budget.

Approved by Gov. Gavin Newsom on June 29, the allocated $20 million will be split between “UC Student Basic Needs, Housing, and Disability Services.” The UC Student Association partnered with state Sen. Sasha Renée Pérez to lobby for this request and proposed splitting the funding equally between basic needs centers and disability services.

According to an annual report to the UC Board of Regents, 73,623 unique students were served by basic needs centers in the 2023-24 academic year. UC basic needs centers provide food and emergency housing and employ more than 400 students annually. These centers also provide CalFresh outreach and application assistance, as 20.7% of UC undergraduate students were enrolled in CalFresh the prior year.
