At 89, Olusegun Obasanjo says he has lived with diabetes for more than 40 years.
Rather than viewing the diagnosis as the end of the road, he says he learned to manage it. He still plays squash three times a week, watches what he eats, prioritises rest when his body needs it, and keeps up with regular medical checks.

"Most diseases that are not curable are manageable," he shared. "Diet, rest, exercise and medical care." He calls his health protocol 'DREMS'.

Some will rightly point out that wealth can make managing a chronic condition easier. Access to healthcare, nutritious food, safe environments to exercise, and specialist care are not equally available to everyone. Those realities matter.
However, his message is still a powerful reminder that while we cannot control everything, there is often more within our control than we think. Lifestyle changes may not cure conditions such as diabetes, but they can improve quality of life, help maintain independence, support healthy ageing, and in some cases reduce the need for increasingly intensive treatments or escalating medication.

A diagnosis is not necessarily a life sentence to poor health. It can also be the beginning of a new way of living.

If you are living with diabetes, what lifestyle change has made the biggest difference to your health?
