## Caption

December 2, 1980. A group of downtown kids who didn't yet know they'd be museum names one day, posing for mock mugshots at a club called Tier 3.

A few weeks earlier, police had raided Danceteria and arrested the staff for serving after hours without a license — twenty-seven people spent the night in jail, Keith Haring among them. He was working as a busboy at the time, between odd jobs, years before the subway chalk drawings made him famous. So when the old Danceteria crew threw themselves a benefit that December, the joke wrote itself: recreate the arrest, but make it a photo op.

In the frame: Haring, David Wojnarowicz, Jesse Hultberg, Max Blagg, Brian Butterick, Haoui Montaug, Carol Black, Zoe Leonard, and Peter McGough — a scene of artists years before the art world caught up to any of them.

This is what the work actually comes out of. Not a gallery opening. A basement club, a bad night turned into a good bit, and a group of people who kept making things anyway.
