Cyclospora infections are surging across the US in 2026, and the usual advice…..just rinse your produce, isn’t the full picture. Here’s what’s actually worth doing:

🔥 Cook your leafy greens and herbs when you can. This parasite survives a normal rinse and even chemical sanitizers, but heat breaks it down, so basil, cilantro, and spinach are safer sautéed than raw.

💧 Wash everything under running water anyway, even if it says “pre-washed” on the bag. It won’t fully eliminate the parasite, but it lowers how much you’re exposed to.

🔪 Peel produce when the option exists. Anything with a skin or rind you can remove takes the contaminated surface off entirely, this is one of the more reliable moves you have.

🥗 Skip bagged and boxed salad kits, both from the grocery store and when you’re eating out. Past Cyclospora outbreaks have repeatedly traced back to bagged greens; the source of this current outbreak although suspected isn’t confirmed yet, so think of this as a precaution, not a confirmed culprit.

Poll: Are you still buying pre-bagged salad kits right now? 🥗
