Dozens of wildfires burning in central and eastern Oregon are billowing a blanket of smoke that’s now among the worst in the nation.

Air quality in eastern Oregon has plummeted in the aftermath of lightning strikes Wednesday that ignited more than 50 fires, the largest of which is about 20,000 acres.
