5 things nobody tells you before you cross-shop these two:

1. The Mustang GT is roughly 500 lbs lighter than a Challenger R/T making similar power. That's not a rounding error — that's the difference between a car that rotates and a car that plows. You feel every single pound in a parking garage, let alone a canyon.

2. The 5.0 Coyote is one of the most overbuilt V8s Ford has ever made. Forged crank, plasma-transferred wire arc cylinder linings — this thing was designed to take abuse. The 5.7 HEMI is solid, but the Coyote's long-term reliability track record is genuinely hard to argue with.

3. Insurance, tires, brakes — the Mustang is cheaper across the board. Smaller footprint, lighter curb weight, less rubber to replace. Challenger guys don't talk about how fast they burn through 275-width rears on a 4,400-lb car.

4. The Mustang aftermarket is so deep it's almost unfair. Intake, exhaust, and a tune on a Coyote picks up real power without cracking the motor open. Meanwhile half the HEMI bolt-on market is just intake noise generators that add 6 whp and a cool story for Cars & Coffee. (Also, budget an extra weekend for every mod you think will take "a couple hours." The S550 engine bay is generous but your knuckles will still find a way to suffer.)

5. Here's where I'll be honest — the Challenger still wins on presence. Nothing else on the road looks like it. If you want the widebody, the rumble, the "I take up the whole lane" energy, the Mustang can't replicate that. It's a vibe purchase and that's valid. But if you're buying a performance car to actually perform, the math only goes one direction.
