We woke up that morning with the ambitious idea of crossing the border and watching El Tri’s crucial knockout match down in Mexico…

Thirty minutes into the drive out of Houston, we realized one of us had left our passports behind many miles ago. It was maybe for the best. We probably wouldn’t have made it across on time for kickoff anyway. But sitting in a random coffee shop trying to regroup, we got an even better idea. 

Last year, we’d driven our beloved bus over to Austin for the US Open Cup Final, and the fans there had blown our minds. Spending just a few days with losverdesatx felt like being with family you never knew you had. Warm, welcoming, and a blast both in and out of the stands. (We’ll never forget passing around bottles of tequila and pizza pies at Tifo practice). 

So it was a no-brainer, we HAD to go to Austin. We really cut it close on timing but pulled up to Hopsquad Brewing—where we’d parked the bus all those months ago—just as the game was starting. We’ve never felt so much joy as when we walked through those doors. 

Nothing really beats that feeling of being on the road for so long and returning to friends you’d met many moons ago. Seeing Dr. Cheryl (c_rolltina), our favorite data scientist/soccer patch maker/road warrior almost brought a tear to our eyes. She gave us a huge hug and a few special patches she’d made for the World Cup, of course. It felt even better than Christmas.

We also got to run into the legendary atxkp, whom we’d last seen with an Open Cup medal around her neck as she waved us goodbye the last time we rolled through Austin. Kindest soul you’ll ever meet and the best person to get you settled when walking into a party. 

From there, the whole night was a blur. Drinks, dancing, and tons of celebrating. It was Mexico’s first World Cup knockout win in 40 years after all. We didn’t go to bed until 3 am. Never mind we had to be in San Francisco by noon the next day. We’d figure it out somehow…
