A spring stores energy. A damper destroys it. Ride, grip and stability all live in that distinction.

Hydraulic damping converts unwanted kinetic energy into heat by forcing oil through a restriction. Move a piston inside a sealed cylinder of fluid and the oil has to go somewhere: through drilled orifices, past spring-steel shims, around a bypass. The pressure needed to push it is the force you feel, and the work done against it leaves as heat in the oil, the tube, and finally the air.

The character of a damper is set by how that fluid behaves:

- Laminar flow through a fine orifice gives force roughly proportional to velocity. F = cv, the idealised viscous damper.
- Turbulent flow through a larger port gives force closer to velocity squared. Real dampers spend most of their life here.
- Shim stacks deflect as pressure rises, opening extra flow area and bending the curve over. Firm control over small inputs, compliance over big ones.

Set the damping coefficient against mass and spring rate and you fix the damping ratio. Below critical the system overshoots and rings. At critical it returns fastest without overshoot. Road cars run roughly 0.2 to 0.4 in heave, deliberately underdamped, because a critically damped car feels dead and an overdamped one posts every ridge straight into the seat.

The failure mode is cavitation. On a fast stroke the low-pressure side can fall below the oil’s vapour pressure, bubbles nucleate, and the fluid briefly loses the stiffness to make force. The damper goes soft, then snaps back as the bubbles collapse. The cure is pressure: monotubes sit a floating piston with nitrogen at 20 to 30 bar behind the oil, which also swallows the volume displaced by the rod entering the tube.

A damper on a rough road dissipates several hundred watts, continuously, through a component the size of a forearm.

Springs decide where the mass goes. Dampers decide whether it argues about it.
