The foal session of the Japan Racing Horse Association (JRHA)’s annual Select Sale is one of the most unique spectacles in the Thoroughbred world ✨ It’s here that hundreds of mares and their foals gather under the trees and across the field at the Northern Horse Park for inspection. 

The mares accompany the foals throughout the grounds, in the parade ring and through the sale ring. After being sold, the mares and foals return to their respective farms for the rearing process to be completed. Once the foals are weaned, the new owner can decide to either move the weanling to a new farm or continue to board them at their original farm.

At this year’s sale, held July 13-14 in Hokkaido, Japan, a Kitasan Black colt foal from the Northern Farm consignment topped the foal offerings when sold for ¥410 million ($2,530,865) 💰 

The sale-topping colt is out of Yankee Rose, herself a champion two- and three-year-old in Australia and already the dam of the Japanese Oaks heroine Liberty Island.

The colt was one of 84 horses to sell for ¥100 million or above at a sale that posted a 93% clearance rate across the two days.
