In October 1974, soul music superstar Al Green was seriously injured at his Memphis home when boiling grits were thrown on him, causing burns that required skin grafts. The incident involved his girlfriend, Mary Woodson, who later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The shocking event became one of the most infamous stories in music history and marked a major turning point in Green’s life. In the years that followed, he dedicated himself more deeply to his faith and eventually became pastor of Full Gospel Tabernacle Church in Memphis.
