More than a dozen wildfires are burning across northern Minnesota after lightning strikes ignited multiple fires during days of hot, dry and windy weather. Thick smoke has blanketed communities near Ely and Garden Lake, making it difficult to breathe and limiting firefighting efforts.

Officials say more than 400 personnel are working to contain the fires, but smoke and low visibility continue to make the response more challenging.
