A 29-year-old Tucson man passed away after authorities say he was swept into fast-moving floodwater during Friday’s monsoon storm.

Ernesto Ojeda was reported missing Friday evening after his family learned he had been near Julian Wash while water levels were rising. Search crews and air support spent several hours checking the wash and Santa Cruz River before dangerous conditions forced them to pause the search.

Crews returned Saturday morning after the water receded, and Ojeda was found shortly before 1 p.m. in the Santa Cruz River near the I-10 and I-19 interchange.

Authorities reported no signs of suspicious circumstances. The Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine his official cause of passing.

Arizona washes can go from dry to dangerous within minutes during monsoon storms. Never enter a flooded wash or attempt to cross moving water.

What more should Arizona communities do to prevent tragedies like this during monsoon season?
