Maricopa County has officially banned its roughly 13,000 employees from using information the public doesn’t have to make money on prediction markets.

Prediction markets let users buy and sell contracts tied to real-world outcomes, including elections, court decisions, sports and political events. Maricopa County’s new policy does not ban employees from every prediction market—it specifically prohibits them from using confidential or nonpublic county information for personal profit. The Board of Supervisors approved the policy unanimously ahead of Arizona’s primary election. 

The move comes as election betting becomes a bigger issue across Arizona. State law already makes wagering on election outcomes a misdemeanor, while Governor Katie Hobbs recently issued a similar order blocking executive-branch employees from profiting with nonpublic government information. 

Arizona is also locked in a larger legal fight with prediction-market platform Kalshi. Attorney General Kris Mayes charged the company earlier this year with allegedly operating an illegal gambling and election-wagering business, though a federal judge temporarily paused the case while courts decide whether these platforms fall under state gambling laws or exclusive federal regulation.
