Waymo just spent $220 million to buy one of the largest vehicle testing grounds in Arizona. 🚘

The 5,458-acre property sits near 211th Avenue and Dove Valley Road in the far northwest Valley, along the Surprise-Wittmann border. The sale closed on June 5. 

The site was previously used by Chrysler and later reportedly by Apple for vehicle testing before Waymo purchased it. It includes specialized roads and tracks designed to recreate city, freeway and high-speed driving conditions away from public traffic. 

Waymo says the facility will help it test and improve its self-driving technology in controlled environments as the company continues expanding its autonomous vehicle operations.

Arizona was already one of the biggest testing grounds for driverless cars. This deal makes Waymo’s presence here even harder to ignore.
