Flagstaff is taking dark skies so seriously that even the interstate lights are getting involved. 🌌

ADOT completed a $1.1 million project in June that replaced more than 370 outdated highway lights around Flagstaff with amber LEDs designed to reduce their impact on the night sky.

The new lights were installed at I-17 and I-40 interchanges, including where the two freeways meet, along with parts of Milton Road and Route 66. ADOT says the goal is to protect Flagstaff’s famous view of the stars without sacrificing visibility for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

Flagstaff became the world’s first International Dark Sky City in 2001, and officials say this is the country’s first deployment of amber LEDs on interstate highways.

Would you like to see more Arizona cities switch to lighting like this?
