Phoenix isn’t just hot because it’s in the desert—the city itself can make nights up to 10–14 degrees warmer than nearby rural areas. 🥵

It’s called the urban heat island effect. Roads, rooftops, buildings and other hard surfaces absorb heat all day, then slowly release it after sunset instead of cooling down like open desert.

Arizona State University’s Climate Office says the effect is typically strongest on calm, dry summer nights, helping explain why Phoenix can still feel brutal long after the sun disappears. 

The city is working to reduce that trapped heat through more trees and shade, reflective pavement and changes to how neighborhoods are designed—but Phoenix’s continued growth means more heat-absorbing surfaces are still being added.
