Leja describes the observable "edge" of the universe, and how we measure both the speed of light and the distance light can travel. As life on Earth has evolved, humanity has often wondered about the possible development of alien civilizations. 

While it's hard to imagine that we are the only planet on which life exists, Leja remarks that we haven't yet received clear messages from aliens.

Joel Leja is an associate professor of astronomy & astrophysics at The Pennsylvania State University. He holds the Dr. Keiko Miwa Ross Mid-Career endowed chair. His research focuses on understanding the processes of galaxy formation through combining modern, deep galaxy surveys with telescopes like JWST with statistics and machine learning.
