Brooklyn painter Adam Umbach takes the objects of childhood, rubber ducks, sailboats, flamingo lawn ornaments, and renders them with photorealistic precision. Then surrounds them with gestural marks so free and instinctive they look like they were made by a joyful child.

Because in a way, they were. The work is lonely and hopeful at the same time. It holds both feelings without resolving them, which is exactly why it stays with you long after you leave the room.
