“One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.” -Psalm 27:4

Our hearts are constantly pulled in a thousand directions. We strive in pursuit of comfort, success, understanding, and security. We are convinced that the next achievement or one more possession will finally satisfy our ravenous hunger. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there were one pursuit that could rightly order every other desire? Though trials and uncertainty pressed in from every side, David focused it all on the LORD. Nothing else compared to being in the presence of the LORD, the One from whom every good thing comes and who alone satisfies the deepest longings of the heart.

There is great peace in returning to what you were made for: to dwell in the house of the LORD. It’s not about trying to do good works or going through the motions of church and devotionals. It is about communion with God Himself. To behold His beauty, to know Him more deeply, to delight in Him above every earthly gift. Everything else fades when compared to the joy of being near the One who made us.

Our desires shape our lives. What we seek is where our hearts dwell. Jesus says to lay up treasures in heaven, not on earth where they will perish. Seek what is eternal, seek what is true. Every lesser pursuit shall find its proper place beneath this one: seek the LORD with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength.

Oh, that we would each say the same of our own desires: that above all else, we would seek to dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of our lives. That our hearts would be set upon Him, our greatest desire being His presence. And one day, faith will become sight, and we shall dwell with Him forever, beholding the beauty of our King.
