11 years ago today, Carly Rae Jepsen released 'Run Away With me.'

Landed officially as the second single from Carly Rae Jepsen's third studio album, "E•MO•TION," via 604, Schoolboy, and Interscope Records — after first surfacing to radio and in Japan that June. Jepsen wrote it in Stockholm alongside Noonie Bao, Robin Fredriksson, and Mattias Larsson, with production and programming handled by Fredriksson and Larsson (working as Mattman & Robin) together with Shellback. Jepsen has said the song began as just an instrumental saxophone riff the Swedish duo played her among a batch of demos they weren't fully confident in — she found the material immediately striking and built the song's soaring topline over it.

The track opens the album with a blast of that now-iconic distorted, reverbed saxophone riff, anchoring a dance-pop and synth-pop sound steeped in glossy '80s nostalgia, paired with lyrics about romantic urgency and escape. Its music video, directed by David Kalani Larkins and filmed lo-fi during Jepsen's promotional tour, ditched the star-studded cast of her earlier "I Really Like You" clip for an intimate, documentary-style look at her literally running through cities around the world; Jepsen has called it the song that captured the real feeling of that touring chapter of her life more than any other on the album. Two rounds of official remixes followed in August 2015 and April 2016, extending the song's life on dance charts.

While 'Run Away with Me' wasn't a chart-topping smash on release, it became a defining fan-favorite and a critical darling, frequently cited by outlets and musicians alike as one of the best pop songs of the 2010s and a touchstone of the "PC music"-adjacent synth-pop revival that shaped indie-pop sensibilities for years after. "E•MO•TION" itself, though a modest commercial performer at the time, has since been widely reassessed as a cult-classic pop masterpiece, with 'Run Away with Me' standing as its most enduring, influential track — still a fixture in Jepsen's live sets and a touchstone she and critics alike return to as one of her career's creative high points.
