Six out of five. Yes, I said what I said.

I watched The Odyssey at the media premiere at VOX IMAX, Mall of the Emirates, and it was hands down one of the most powerful movie experiences I’ve had.

No spoilers. But there are scenes in this film that are genuinely spine-chilling.

Not because they are simply loud or visually grand, but because Nolan knows how to build tension until an entire theatre seems to stop breathing at once.

The scale is enormous.
The cinematography is breathtaking.
The background score almost becomes a character of its own.
And despite being almost three hours long, I never felt the urge to check the time.

Matt Damon carries the weight of Odysseus beautifully, and the ensemble is ridiculously good. The performances give the spectacle its emotional core, which is what stops the film from becoming just another big-budget visual extravaganza.

My only peeve?

When you assemble names like Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron, you naturally want more of some of them.

A few appearances felt far too brief for actors of that stature.

But perhaps that is the point.

This is not an ensemble movie where everyone gets an equal moment.

This is Nolan’s world, and we are all just living in it.

It is haunting, emotional, intense, visually overwhelming and strangely intimate despite its massive scale. A story about war, consequence, survival and the exhausting journey back to yourself.

And please, do not wait for this one to arrive on streaming.

It was shot entirely using IMAX film technology, and you can feel that intention in every landscape, every battle and every moment of silence. This film was designed to consume the screen, not sit politely inside your television. (VOX Cinemas)

Wherever you live, find the best IMAX screen near you.

And if you’re in Dubai, watch it at VOX IMAX.

The Odyssey releases in the UAE on 16 July 2026. (VOX Cinemas)

My rating: 6/5.

Some journeys are watched.

This one has to be survived.
