“What a spectacular feeling it was to witness the crack come alive as the darkness enveloped around us.”⁣

This image began as an idea that came to Krystle Wright (krystlejwright) while driving to her local climbing crag. Wanting to reveal the defining feature of traditional climbing in a way rarely seen before, she imagined illuminating the inside of a crack from within. Together with climber Angela VanWiemeersch (angela_vanwiemeersch), she brought that vision to life on “Seventh Serpent” in Long Canyon, Utah.⁣

Captured with the #LeicaSL2, the photograph is a testament to the creative process itself: an idea, a challenge, careful planning, and the determination to see it through. The image went on to win the Innovation by MPB category and was ultimately named Overall Winner of the Red Bull Illume Image Quest 2023.⁣
